Check axle groups and gross weight against the federal limits before the scale does.

The three weight limits every truck has

  1. Each axle and axle group. 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem, federally.
  2. Every group of axles. The bridge formula sets a limit for every run of two or more consecutive axles, based on how many there are and how far apart.
  3. Gross. 80,000 lb on the Interstate, unless a permit says otherwise.

A load can pass one and fail another. Sliding the trailer tandems changes how the weight splits and how long each axle group is, which is why the slider is the first thing to check.
