Freight pricing turns on two measurements: what a shipment weighs and how much space it takes. Every mode handles that trade-off differently. LTL carriers convert density into a freight class. Parcel carriers compare actual weight against a weight derived from the box's volume. Air freight counts a cubic metre as 167 kg, ocean LCL counts it as 1,000. The same pallet gets a different answer from each.
These calculators use the published rules for each: the 13-subprovision NMFC density scale that took effect on 19 July 2025, the carriers' own DIM divisors, and the IATA and revenue-ton conventions. Each page shows the formula and the assumptions, so you can check the result rather than take it on trust.
They are built for quoting, comparing packaging decisions and checking an invoice. They are not a substitute for the NMFC listing that governs your commodity, or for your own rate agreement.
